Customer Reviews about Western Digital 1.5TB USB 2.0 MyBook Studio External Hard Drive with FireWire 800

I had good experiences with Western Digital Book Harddrives for PCs before, so it was a no brainer for me to go for the 2TB WD harddrive when i bought an iMac. The harddrive functions straight out of the box, file transfer rates are very high, and the harddrive is very quiet. Reading the other reviews i stayed away from installing the WD software, which means that i cant use the front display showing me the remaining free space on the harddrive. However this is not a big issue for me as i placed all my harddrives next to my airport in a cabinet to keep my desk clutterfree and they are all out of sight.
I had a failing hard drive from WD before and they replaced it after the 1 year warranty was over (3 months) without any fuss. While i would stay away from WD portable harddrives due to their flimsy cables, this desktop harddrive is exactly whaat you need. It has a silver relatively plastic-cy look on the outside. While it kind of fits with the aluminium iMac/Macbook pro look, if you are very particular about the look of anything next to your apple products, may be this is not the right one for it.

Overall i would highly recommend this product for what it does. -- Great product, does what it says on the tin
I purchased this as it said both PC & Mac compatable. However setting it up on a PC I needed to install software, format the drive to NTFS before I could use it. I would recommend it for size and relability but not for somebody looking for a plug & play external HD as it took some time to set up and configure. -- Reliable once set up.
Lovely little drive, small footprint, and the ability to name them on the display is really handy. I use my with my Mac Pro and I didn't bother with the WD software (that some have moaned about) other than to sort the display name. The software is not what you're buying when you get a drive - it's the performance, and these are top notch. Liked it so much I bought a second one. Highly recommended. -- So nice I bought it twice
If you have a mac then this is the easiest thing in the world to set up, just plug it in with the supplied firewire cable, turn it on and the mac asks if you want to use this as the time machine. Once the initial data has backed up it then runs every hour to backup any changes.

I use this mainly for backup but predominantly for for audio recording using Logic Pro, all my audio files are stored on this and I have had no issues after some serious use in the first month or so -- So easy to set up
Very good value. I've been using it for 4 weeks and it performs very well. Once it's set-up it only takes about 5 minutes to back-up and there's still over 600gb of extra space for storage. This is an excellent product. And it looks good next to my Mac. -- Peace of mind
